Teaching

I have taught for about ten years at the universities of Zurich, Geneva, Basel and Heidelberg at BA and MA level: corpus linguistics and corpus pragmatics, discourse, media and cultural linguistics, semantics and pragmatics, modern language history, academic writing.

In my courses, students work close to the sources and go through a small research cycle of their own, from question to presentation of results. I do not treat methods as neutral: whoever understands a procedure knows which findings are due to the object and which to the tool. This applies to corpus tools as much as to generative AI.

With Noah Bubenhofer I have designed and coordinated the summer school Zürcher Korpuslinguistik und Korpuspragmatik (ZuKoKo) since 2021. I also give regular training courses for teachers, mainly on the Matura thesis and on writing with AI, and have co-developed several digital learning environments, among them KoDuP, an introduction to corpus analysis with Python for students of German.

Course titles below are given in the language of instruction.
